Designing your own t-shirt can be a fun, creative activity, and may even bring you some money if you decide to sell your designs. Whether you intend to print the shirt yourself or send it off to a professional printer, you can still come up with the design for your shirt right at home.
When designing a t-shirt, it’s important to think about color contrast. This means how certain ink colors in the design will appear against a lighter colored shirt or a darker colored shirt. Certain ink colors look more vibrant on a lighter or darker shirt on the computer screen than they actually do when printed.
A nice way to customize your t-shirt is by painting it. Not always easy if you don’t have an artist’s soul! But there is an easy way to do it – did you know you can use freezer paper as a stencil? It’s very simple, you only need a few supplies and this shirt design tutorial!
What You’ll Need
- freezer paper
- foam brush
- fabric paint
How To Make A Stenciled T-Shirt
Step 1: Draw Your Design
Draw your design on the freezer paper, on the side without plastic wrap. You can also print your design directly on the freezer paper.
Step 2: Cut
Carefully cut your drawn design out of the freezer paper.
Step 3: Position
Position your stencil on the t-shirt, be sure the side with the plastic wrap is against the fabric. Iron your stencil to make it stick to the t-shirt.
Step 4: Slip A Piece Of Cardboard
Slip a piece of cardboard or newspaper into your shirt to prevent the paint from bleeding through the back of your t-shirt.
Step 5: Paint
With a foam brush start painting your t-shirt. Go slowly and use little paint at a time.
Step 6: Remove
When the paint is dry, carefully remove the stencil. Just pull it gently, it can be removed easily.
